as of 2012, my final palette for Odd Nerdrum copying is the same exact palette he uses. Premixtures made from Titanium white, yellow ochre, vermillion, and mars black. the premixtures are black plus white to make gray, black plus vermillion to make brown, ochre plus vermillion plus white to make 2 shades of "rosa". Some greens are made by black and ochre but that is something I do personally, he probably does. happy painting.
THIS IS GOING TO BE MY FINAL PALETTE OF COLORS FOR NOW. It is for all flesh colors and the whole painting in general. It is a BROWN BASED color solution to all my color problems. So for a purplish light flesh you mix burnt sienna, plus white, plus purple. For a dark purple flesh you mix burnt umber, plus white, plus purple. Brown and white are your BASE colors, and you mix those two with others to get your "flesh tones" "sky tones" Earth tones, etc. The colors are, Titanium white, cadmium yellow hue, cadmium orange hue, cadmium red hue, alizarin crimson, prussian blue, hookers green, burnt sienna, burnt umber. THAT IS IT. I DO NOT USE BLACK. BLACK IS THE DEATH OF A PAINTING. Use burnt umber plus blue to get your "black", it is more powerful and deeper than black pigment could ever get, and cooler, complimenting your warm light masses.
My new palette is Mars black, Venetian red, Gold ochre, and white, you can copy every single current Odd Nerdrum painting with this palette, check out my blog
To get warmer darks, try a reddish ground. Change your palette to only black, burnt umber, cakmium red, yellow ochre, and titanium white. Brown on your palette with make muddy color unless it is glazed only. Grayed color glows when you juxtapose grayed complimentary colors next to each other in your painting. I just lowered the prices on all of my ebooks to between $15 and $9 on http://oldmastercopies.com my latest book/work discusses more accurately the techniques used by Nerdrum, using good palette of muted colors, finger painting, glaze wipe outs, and sanding. It is my most accurate book. Called copying Derek Van Derven's paintings all in one . etc. With "portrait of a woman" and of christ on the cover, I still am waiting to publish the paperback book
Thank you for posting that link. I saw the profile Nerdrumesque painting you did, very nice drawing and old master looking. You can try painting the receding areas that are to go back with your fingers, wiping around the background paint with a rag, knife paint in the front areas to come forward with more texture of tone, glaze a mixture of black and brown over the whole thing so it is dark, and wipe out the lights, then post the new painting if you do another one with these things please, thanks.
